CHILD PROTECTION MEDICAL UPDATE

Wednesday 27 August 2025, Clinical Education Centre, Auckland City Hospital

You are invited to a one-day medical update lecture series on child protection.

This day can be attended either face-to-face in the Clinical Education Centre at Auckland Hospital, or virtually (online).

For many of us, there are few situations more stressful than having to manage a case of possible child abuse, and if we don’t manage such cases very often, the anxiety may be even greater. The purpose of this day is to provide a one-day update on some topics which we believe will be of interest to busy general paediatricians throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Because we will be discussing complex clinical scenarios including clinical cases, this day will only be open to registrants who are confirmed to be advanced trainees in paediatrics, paediatricians or appropriate allied health professionals in clinical practice in Australia or New Zealand.
The lecture series will be given by Professor Lori Frasier, Professor of Pediatrics at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital in Pennsylvania, USA.

Programme

8:00am – 9:00am Multiple Fractures in Infancy: Distinguishing Non-Accidental Injury from Other Causes
This will be given as part of the weekly Starship “Paediatric Update” lecture series. This session will cover alternative diagnoses that may need to be considered when a child presents with multiple unexplained fractures, the diagnostic approach and the role of specific investigations (e.g. investigations for disorders of bony mineralisation, genetic testing for heritable disorders of bony fragility, assessment for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, etc.)

9:30am – 10:30am Current Controversies in Abusive Head Trauma
This session will provide an up-to-the-minute update and perspective on some of the controversies which continue to swirl around the diagnosis of abusive head trauma, in New Zealand, Australia and internationally, and some useful pointers on how best to navigate those controversies both in clinical practice and in medico-legal proceedings.

11:00am – 12:00pm Medical Child Abuse
There are few, if any, issues in child protection which are more time-consuming, and more demanding on clinicians, than suspected medical child abuse (often known by other names such as Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, Paediatric Condition Falsification or Fabricated or Induced Illness). Yet the key to success is usually not referral to specialist child protection paediatricians, but a collaborative effort between all involved to call a halt to unnecessary medical interventions, and persuade extended family, statutory child protective services and the police to act to keep the child safe. This session will provide tips and tricks to assist paediatricians involved in such cases.

1:00pm – 3:00pm Complex Cases
This session provides an opportunity for registrants to present their own complex cases for discussion and feedback from a panel of contributors, led by Professor Frasier. Presentations can be up to 20-30 minutes, depending on complexity, and those who would like to present a case are asked to talk this through with Dr Kelly, the course convenor, prior to acceptance. Cases can come from any sphere of child protection – physical abuse, neglect, sexual abuse, or any other case related to child protection where the presenter would value peer review or advice, or believes that the case offers some useful lessons that we could all learn from.

Registration

The cost for the one-day Child Protection Update is $175 inclusive of GST for the day.
