Child Protection Medical Update

Wednesday 19 August 2026, Clinical Education Centre, Auckland City Hospital
All across the motu, it is general paediatricians who care for most children who present to a health professional with concerns about possible child abuse or neglect.

We are all time poor. So, this year, Starship is again offering a one-day child protection medical update for health and allied health professionals seeking accessible CPE in this area of practice. You can attend in person at the Clinical Education Centre at Auckland Hospital, or virtually (online).

We are currently designing the programme for this one-day child protection medical update, and we
would welcome your input into the topics you would like to see covered this year.
If you have ideas, requests or suggestions, please email Dr Kelly at [email protected]

In 2025, the programme covered the topics of “Multiple Fractures in Infancy”, “Current Controversies in Abusive Head Trauma” and “Medical Child Abuse”.

As we did last year, we will run an afternoon session which will enable you to present your own deidentified cases for discussion and feedback. Cases can come from any sphere of child protection – neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, or any other aspect of child protection where you would value peer review, or believe the case offers some useful lessons that we could all learn from.

This peer review session was one of the highlights in 2025, and we had a great deal of positive feedback, both from the presenters and from other participants. It was a great opportunity for networking and mutual support and illustrated the complexity and challenges of the work that so many of you do in child protection, throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.

We hope to announce the programme for Wednesday 19th August by the end of May.
